Health Benefits of Soy

Soy Isoflavones and Phytoestrogen supplements began growing in popularity after the side effects of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) began to become known. Researchers studied the Asian diet, in particular, to discover why menopause affected Asian women less than in women other countries. This led to the discovery of soy isoflavones and phytoestrogen, as the Asian diet is high in soy food products.

From these studies, science has concluded that a diet high in soy can lead to a healthier reproductive system and to fewer problems during the menopausal years. Other benefits of soy may include inhibiting plaque growth on the arteries and as an anti-oxidant that can help protect from bad cholesterol. and building bone density and strength.

Soy Isoflavones has also been linked to building bone density and strength. This benefit can also protect against bone deteriorations common in aging. By helping the bones to remain strong, this can be beneficial in preventing splintering and fractures caused by falls in older people.

The phytoestrogen found in soy isoflavones can help to normalize estrogen production in the body. By keeping the estrogen levels steady, many of the adverse symptoms of menopause are reduced or alleviated altogether.

A recent study by the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center suggests that women who have higher levels of estrogens may reduce their risk of breast cancer by supplementing their diets with soy isoflavones.

The study revealed that the phytoestrogen found in soy isoflavones could possibly block natural estrogens, which can cause the proliferation of breast cancer cells. Higher than average natural estrogen levels can be produced by hormone therapy or by above normal body fat ratios. High supplemental doses of soy phytoestrogen appear to be key to the benefits.

Soy Isoflavones are present in all soy food products and are available in supplemental forms as pills, capsules and powders. Women who are looking for the benefit of soy phytoestrogen can find numerous products on the market containing these natural plant estrogens.

Tofu, Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP), soymilk and tempeh are all natural ways of introducing soy isoflavones into the diet.

By the simple addition of soy foods or soy supplements into the diet a wealth of benefits can be enjoyed, no matter your age or gender.
